Euro 2016 preview – Scotland vs Poland prediction

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan is without Charlie Mulgrew, Ikechi Anya and Kevin McDonald plus James Morrison is suspended. Steven Whittaker may come in to take the place of Mulgrew at left-back. Strachan’s teams have not changed a great deal over the course of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign and the bulk of the starting XI is set to reflect that.

Poland manager Adam Nawalka, has also confirmed that he plans to stick with the bulk of the same team which has taken Poland to the brink of qualifying for the finals.

Possible Line-ups

Scotland: 4-2-3-1 formation: Marshall; Hutton, Martin, Hanley, Whittaker; McArthur, Brown; Forrest, Naismith, Maloney; Fletcher

Poland: 4-4-2 formation: Fabianski; Piszczek, Szukula, Glik, Rybus; Blaszczykowski, Maczynski, Krychowiak, Grosicki; Lewandowski, Milik

Statistics

  • Scotland have won 5, drawn 2 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Poland have won 5, drawn 4 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Scotland have scored an average of 1.6 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Poland have scored an average of 3.1 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Scotland’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Poland’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Currently sitting in fourth place, with 11 points from their 8 games played, Scotland have to win this match to stand any chance of making it to Euro 2016. In-fact, the best they can now hope for is to finish as one of the best third placed teams. Things were looking good for Scotland prior to the trip to Georgia, where they lost 1-0 and were then defeated at home by Germany 3-2. Having conceded those 3 goals to Germany, Gordon Strachan’s team will need to defender better in order to keep out Robert Lewandowski.

Poland turned over Gibraltar 8-1 in their last Euro 2016 qualifying match but it didn’t make up for the 3-1 defeat in Germany. Having conceded 2 early goals in that game, it was always going to be tough to get anything from it. Although Poland are currently sitting in second place in the group, nothing has been concluded and anything but a win here, could let in Republic of Ireland. This would then make the final game between Poland and Ireland a winner takes all match and Adam Nawaka will be keen to avoid that scenario.

This match is basically win or bust for Scotland and they are sure to start strongly. However, performances have not been convincing of late, even at home and Poland could come away with a point.
