Premier League preview – Chelsea vs Newcastle prediction.

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma looks likely to miss the remainder of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United. Gary Cahill will get his first Premier League start since scoring an own goal against Watford on Boxing Day. Diego Costa earned Chelsea the point with his injury time equaliser on Sunday and is likely to keep his place in the starting eleven with January signing Alexandre Pato awaiting his chance on the bench. Guus Hiddink’s other striking options, Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao remained sidelined.

Newcastle have better options in the injury-depleted squad after Steve McClaren was allowed to make some substantial signings in the January transfer window. JonJo Shelvey and Andros Townsend have slotted straight into the starting eleven while Senegalese forward Henri Saivet has been used sparingly in the four games since his arrival from Bordeaux. McClaren may target the Cahill/Terry combo’s vulnerability to pace by giving Seydou Doumbia his first opportunity since joining on loan from Roma.

Possible Line-ups

Chelsea 4-2-3-1 formation: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta; Mikel, Matic; Willian, Fabregas, Oscar; Costa

Newcastle 4-2-3-1 formation: Elliot; Janmaat, Taylor, Coloccini, Aarons; Shelvey, Tiote; Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Townsend; Mitrovic

  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Chelsea’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Chelsea remain unbeaten under interim coach Guus Hiddink but last weekend’s draw at Stamford Bridge was the fourth in the last five league games. The Blues’ last home win in the league was against Sunderland in mid-December since when the home fans have watched their team draw against Watford, West Brom, Everton and Manchester United.

Newcastle won for the second time in four games to climb out of the bottom three when defeating a poor West Brom side 1-0 at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Magpies have lost the last four games on the road since gaining their second away win of the season at Tottenham on 13 December. Newcastle have failed to find the net on the last three trips to Stamford Bridge, leaving without a point on each occasion.

Newcastle carry a bigger threat thanks to the new signings but remain vulnerable in defence and it will be a surprise to see an improvement on their recent record at Stamford Bridge.
