Premier League preview – Manchester City vs Tottenham prediction.

Manuel Pellegrini faces a dilemma when Manchester City host Tottenham on Sunday after David Silva finally succumbed to the ankle injury that has affected his recent performances. Jesus Navas, Kevin de Bruyne and Samir Nasri are also sidelined leaving Pellegrini with the choice of 19-year-old centre forward Kelechi Iheanacho or Norwegian teenager Bersant Celina who has played less than 30 minutes of first team football. Leading scorer Sergio Garcia has avoided injury and will be looking to add to his 14-goal tally after netting six times in the last four league games.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has few injury concerns and healthy competition for places. Eric Dier and Kevin Wimmer have done admirable jobs providing cover in the absence of Jan Vertonghen. Wimmer looks set to continue his partnership with Toby Alderweireld in the centre of defence after the duo helped keep clean sheets in the last two games. Dier will be allowed to play his more familiar midfield role. Full backs Ben Davies and Kierran Trippier deserve to keep their places ahead of Danny Rose and Kyle Walker while Erik Lamela and Hueng-Min Son compete for a start on the right.

Possible Line-ups

Manchester City 4-2-3-1 formation: Hart; Sagna, Otamendi, Demichelis, Clichy; Fernandinho, Delph; Sterling, Toure, Iheanacho; Aguero

Tottenham 4-2-3-1 formation: Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies; Dier, Dembele; Lamela, Alli, Eriksen; Kane

Prediction

Manchester City’s title hopes have been dented by injury to key players which has exposed a lack of depth in some areas of the squad. Silva’s influence has been marred by ankle trouble and it has shown in recent games where City have dropped five points in the last three. Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat by league leaders Leicester was their third home defeat of the season while Everton’s suspect defence was able to hold out for a 0-0 draw last month.

Pundits are beginning to see Tottenham as genuine title contenders after a run of four successive wins has taken the North London club above neighbours Arsenal and Sunday’s opponents into second place. Tottenham have scored 11 and conceded 2 in that run which came against lesser sides, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Norwich and Watford. Pochettino’s men have an impressive record while on their travels and are undefeated away from home since losing 1-0 to Manchester United on the opening day of the season.

Manchester City have not lost two home games in succession since the Mark Hughes era in 2008 and odds against City at home is too tempting to overlook given their record of bouncing back from a bad defeat.
