Huddersfield Town take on Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday in a Championship Play-Off Semi-Final 1st Leg clash at John Smith’s Stadium this Sunday lunch time. Read the match predictions to find out why an away win is the betting tip in this crucial encounter. The Terriers finished level on points with the Owls over 46 matches in the regular season and it could be hard to separate them here, although Sheff Wed have had the edge in recent meetings.

Huddersfield Town vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Huddersfield will start with 21-year-old Joel Coleman between the sticks, after Danny Ward was sent off for handling outside the area against Cardiff last time out. Elia Kachunga is back in training but will not be rushed into action, with Nahki Wells likely to start up-front. Philip Billing and Kasey Palmer are missing from the midfield through injury, joining long-term absentee Jon Gorenc Stankovic on the sidelines.

Sheff Wed will return a number of their key players to the starting lineup after resting them against Fulham. Keiren Westwood returns in goal and will be protected by centre-backs Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens. Barry Bannan comes back into the engine room while Ross Wallace and Adam Reach return on the flanks. Marco Matias is suspended and Gary Hooper is out with a hamstring injury.

Huddersfield Town vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction

Huddersfield Town looked capable of pushing the top two for automatic promotion in the final weeks of the regular season but had to settle for the playoffs. Winning one game from five at the end of the campaign makes for grim reading and the home side will need to redouble efforts here. The Terriers have struggled for goals of late and couldn’t find the net in defeats away to Birmingham City or at home to Cardiff City.

By contrast, Sheffield Wednesday ended the season in great style, winning six in a row before a final day defeat at home to Fulham when a playoff berth was already secured. The visitors will be back at full strength for this one and have already done the double over Huddersfield this season.

Each of the previous nine meetings between these sides at this venue has produced fewer than three goals. Huddersfield have shipped at least two goals in their last three home matches in the Championship while Sheff Wed have won their last three on the road. The away side have kept a clean sheet in on their last six visits to Huddersfield and can take a slender lead back to Hillsborough.
