Newcastle United entertain Norwich City on Wednesday in a match that is likely to have a significant bearing on the race for promotion. Read the match predictions to find out why Newcastle are the betting tip to get one over on their Championship rivals.

Newcastle v Norwich Preview

Newcastle were made to pay for spurning numerous opportunities away to Aston Villa and eventually surrendered their lead to draw 1-1. Meanwhile, Norwich top the table with a four point advantage over the hosts after 3-1 triumph against Burton Albion.

Despite a questionable performance against Aston Villa, Matz Sels is expected to retain his place between the sticks and remain the only ever-present player for Newcastle this season. It should be as you were at the back, with Chancel Mbemba given a watching brief once again. Rafa Benitez has been tinkering with his midfield but wholesale changes are unlikely. Mohamed Diame and Dwight Gayle didn’t have their shooting boots on last time so could come under pressure, with Aleksandar Mitrovic vying for inclusion in attack.

Norwich boss Alex Neil is unlikely to heavily rotate his squad after a run of 5 consecutive wins. Michael McGovern should be protected by the same back four that started against Burton, with Graham Dorrans and Jonny Howson in the double-pivot to screen the defence. Robbie Brady had a penalty saved last time out and is likely to continue on the left with goal-scorer Jacob Murphy on the opposite flank. Wes Hoolahan looks set to continue in the hole behind lone striker Cameron Jerome.

Newcastle v Norwich Prediction

Newcastle’s profligacy was their downfall away to Aston Villa, with Mo Diame and and Dwight Gayle in particular both missing absolute sitters. In truth, the Magpies could have been out of sight at the break but Aston Villa grew into the game and made Newcastle pay with a late equaliser.

Rafa Benitez will be hoping to pick his player up from that setback for what could be a pivotal clash in the race for promotion. Even at St James’ Park, you never quite know what you’re going to get from Newcastle but they’ll certainly have a point to prove and will be targeting maximum points.

Norwich arrive in fantastic form having chalked up 5 straight wins. However, the Canaries have a dismal record in this fixture and were thrashed 6-2 on their last visit to Tyneside. Norwich have been behind by half time in four straight defeats away to Newcastle, so will need every ounce of confidence gained from their current run to get a result.

Norwich did brilliantly to keep Everton at bay in the English Football League Cup but the fact that they have failed to register a clean sheet in 5 Championship matches can’t be ignored. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see a repeat of last season’s goal-fest but Newcastle are taken to outscore the visitors here.
