Surprisingly, the race has gone to horses carrying 11 stone or more on ten of the last 12 runnings including three top weights, a tag which is likely to go to the Ross O’Sullivan-trained Baie Des Iles on Saturday. However, a hike of 5lb for winning at Punchestown last time may be enough to anchor the lightly-raced six-year-old on this occasion. Trainer Kerry Lee does well with her staying chasers and both Mountainous and Russe Blanc are interesting towards the foot of the handicap but it is another of the fair sex in Emma Lavelle who could hold the answer to the race in the shape of this week’s racing tip, Shotgun Paddy.

The son of Bryan Boru has been threatening to win a decent marathon chase for some time and at last the handicapper has given the tip every chance off a mark of 137, the lowest the gelding will have carried since 2013. Second in this race 12 months ago off 7lb lower following a fine effort in the Coral Welsh National, finding only Mountainous (9lb worse off here) and Firebird Flyer too good. After a couple of below-par efforts Shotgun Paddy showed something like his best form when finishing third behind Randox Health Grand National fancy One For Arthur at Warwick and a repeat of that performance should see the selection go close in the Newcastle stamina test.
