Euro 2016 final preview – Portugal vs France prediction.

William Carvalho returns for Portugal – having been suspended for their 2-0 win over Euro 2016 surprise package Wales – and could take the place of Danilo in the centre of the Portuguese midfield. Pepe is also expected to recover from a thigh problem to feature in the defence, but it will be touch and go until Sunday night.

Both Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud safely negotiated France’s 2-0 semi-final win over Germany without picking up a yellow card, so France have no suspended players going into the final at the Stade de France and Didier Deschamps has a full quota of players to pick from.

Possible Line-ups

Portugal 4-1-3-2 formation: Patricio, Soares, Pepe, Fonte, Eliseu, Pereira, Carvalho, Sanches, Mario, Nani, Ronaldo.

France 4-3-2-1 formation: Lloris, Sagna, Rami, Koscielny, Evra, Matuidi, Kante, Pogba, Griezmann, Payet, Giroud.

Prediction

Portugal finally managed to claim a win within 90 minutes for the first time in the tournament with their 2-0 success over Wales in their Euro 2016 semi-final clash. With five draws, including an extra-time win over Croatia and knocking Poland out on penalties, it’s fair to say that Portugal had scraped through to the last-four without ever finding their best form.

They stepped up their game to see off an inspirational Welsh side, but it remains to be seen if that game was just an exception to the rest of their performances in France.

In contrast, France have been the form side of Euro 2016 and cemented their credentials as European champions with their win over World Cup holders Germany.

France have won each of their last five previous meetings with Portugal, including two friendlies within the last two years. They have only managed to win each of those games by a single-goal margin – needing extra time in both Euro ‘84 and Euro 2000 to claim 2-1 victories.

Coincidentally, both of those extra-time triumphs for Les Bleus came on home soil on their way to winning each of their two European Championship titles. Expect lightning to strike a third time on Sunday – as the host nation live up to their billing as pre-tournament favourites and complete the job in front of their fans in Paris.
