Spain play host to Italy for a World Cup Qualifier on Saturday evening. Read the match predictions to find out why a Spain win is the betting tip at Santiago Bernabéu. Spain were within minutes of beating Italy in the reverse fixture until a late Daniele De Rossi penalty cancelled out Vitolo’s opener to ensure the points were shared. On home soil, La Furia Roja are taken to see it through.

Spain vs Italy Preview

Spain welcome back David Villa to the international fold but the old timer is unlikely to start ahead of Alvaro Morata. The new Chelsea signing will be flanked by David Silva and Pedro in an attack-minded formation. The hosts have no injury concerns, so Julen Lopetegui is expected to name a predictable starting XI to extend his unbeaten run as head coach.

Italy boss Gian Piero Ventura has tinkered with his formation of late but is predicted to go with a back three here. The Azzurri have been dealt an injury blow with stalwart Giorgio Chiellini ruled out, meaning that Daniele Rugani will deputise. Ciro Immobile and Andrea Belotti will partner up in attack.

Team Predictions Spain vs Italy

Italy 3-4-1-2 formation: Buffon; Rugani, Bonucci, Barzagli; Darmian, Montolivo, Rossi, Conti; Verratti; Immobile, Belotti

Spain vs Italy Prediction

Earlier in the campaign, Spain came agonisingly close to ending Italy’s long unbeaten run in qualifiers that now stretches to 56 matches. They were by far the better side that day and will be confident of getting three points here, being on a 14-game undefeated streak themselves.

Italy are level on points with Spain but have looked shaky on the road in Group G. Their 1-3 win in Israel was not as convincing as the scoreline suggests and they left it late to win 2-3 against FYR Macedonia. If the visitors get off to a slow start here, it’s unlikely that Spain will be so forgiving.

The home side have kept a clean sheet in all but one of the previous seven meetings between these sides. It’s also worth noting that all five of the most recent matches between these nations has produced under 2.5 goals. This is set to be a tense, tactical dual, which Spain should edge.
