Southampton take on Liverpool in a televised EFL Cup match this Wednesday. Read the match predictions to find out why an away win is the betting tip at St Mary’s. Saints come into this match on the back of a 2-2 draw away to Championship side Norwich City in the FA Cup. The Reds were also held, drawing 0-0 at home to League Two side Plymouth Argyle.

Southampton vs Liverpool Preview

Southampton will be without Jose Fonte after the defender handed in a transfer request. His absence will mean that Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida will partner up at the back. Club-record signing Sofiane Boufal is injured, as is Charlie Austin, so Shane Long looks set to lead the line, with Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic on either side.

Liverpool named a youthful side against Plymouth but Jurgen Klopp is expected to recall a number of experienced players here. Sadio Mane is at the African Cup of Nations and the likes of Joel Matip, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Philippe Coutinho are likely to be rested ahead of the showdown with Manchester United at the weekend. Adam Lallana has been in great form this season and is one to watch on the left-hand side.

Team Predictions Southampton vs Liverpool

Southampton 4-3-3 formation: Forster; Bertrand, van Dijk, Yoshida, Soares; Davis, Romeu, Hojberg; Redmond, Long, Tadic

Liverpool 4-3-3 formation: Mignolet; Moreno, Klavan, Lovren, Clyne; Ejara, Can, Wijnaldum; Lallana, Sturridge; Firmino

Southampton vs Liverpool Betting Tips

  • Southampton have won 3 drawn 3 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Liverpool have won 6 drawn 3 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Southampton have scored an average of 1.1 goals and conceded an average of 1.6 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Liverpool have scored an average of 2.0 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Southampton’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Liverpool’s previous 10 matches

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction

Southampton are in a rut at the moment and the draw with Norwich stretched their winless run to a fourth match. Saints have won just twice in their last nine outings and have lost three of their last four matches. One glimmer of hope is that they held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw back in November.

A line can be put through Liverpool’s unexpected draw with Plymouth, given that the majority of their starting XI was made up of youth players. The Reds are unbeaten in seven outings and have lost just once in their last twenty-three, so will be confident of getting a result.

As useful as Southampton have been at home this season, they have regressed and lost their last two matches at St Mary’s. Liverpool will be back to something near full strength here and can cause the hosts real problems. I’m backing the visitors to win this and they may even keep a rare clean sheet.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction, Betting Tips and Preview – 19-11-16 -15/11/16 10:11 read →

Southampton play host to Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday. Read the match predictions to find out why an away win is the betting tip at St Mary’s. Saints come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Hull City while Liverpool thrashed Watford 6-1 to go top of the table.

Southampton vs Liverpool Preview

Southampton are still without Shane Long, Jake Hesketh, Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett, Harrison Reed, Jeremy Pied and Cedric Soares through injury. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg withdrew from the Denmark squad and is doubtful along with Ryan Bertrand who picked up a knock on international duty. Dusan Tadic is expected to play despite a suspected broken nose.

Liverpool striker Danny Ings is out for up to 9 months with a knee injury. Sheyi Ojo and Joe Gomez have returned to training but are unlikely to warrent a start. Adam Lallana sustained a calf injury in England’s 2-2 draw with Spain and is expected to miss out here.

Team Predictions Southampton vs Liverpool

Southampton 4-3-3 formation: Forster; McQueen, van Dijk, Fonte, Yoshida; Davis, Romeu, Clasie; Boufal, Austin, Tadic

Liverpool 4-3-3 formation: Karius; Milner, Matip, Lovren, Clyne; Can, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Coutinho, Firmino, Mane

Southampton vs Liverpool Betting Tips

  • Southampton have won 4 drawn 3 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Liverpool have won 9 drawn 1 and lost 0 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Southampton have scored an average of 1.1 goals and conceded an average of 0.8 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Liverpool have scored an average of 3.0 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Southampton’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 9 of Liverpool’s previous 10 matches

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction

Southampton’s form is erratic and patchy. They managed a creditable 1-1 draw away to man City before struggling to overcome Sunderland 1-0. Then lost 0-2 at home to Chelsea but bounced back to record a memorable 2-1 victory over Inter in the Europa League. The latest setback against Hull leaves them in mid table but they will need to improve to compete with the league leaders here.

Liverpool are flying high and playing some brilliant football, just look at some of the goals in the video above. After a bore-draw with Manchester United, they won 2-1 at home against West Brom and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. They then came out on top in a 2-4 thriller away at Crystal Palace before putting 6 past Watford.

Southampton are a good side but just can’t seem to build any momentum, whereas Liverpool are in the winning groove. Saints like to keep it tight but I think there’ll be a few goals in this one. I expect the home side to make a game of it but just fancy the visitors to have that bit more in attack to outscore their hosts.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction and Preview – 02/12/15 -13:20 read →

Capital One Cup preview – Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction and Preview prediction

Southampton defender Jose Fonte is doubtful after suffering a knock on his knee against Manchester City on Sunday. Jay Rodriguez will be out until January while Florin Gardos and Fraser Forster could miss the rest of the season with their injuries. Graziano Pelle missed the trip to Manchester due to suspension and could slot in up front with Shane Long moving wide.

England internationals Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson returned to the Liverpool match day squad, appearing as substitutes in the 1-0 home win against Swansea on Sunday. Lucas was suspended for the game and could return as Jurgen Klopp shuffles the midfield three. Phillipe Coutinho has been resting a hamstring injury and also comes into consideration this week.

Possible Line-ups

Southampton: 4-2-3-1 formation: Stekelenburg; Yoshida, Caulker, van Dijk, Bertrand ; Wanyama, Romeu; Long, Ward-Prowse, Davis; Pelle

Liverpool: 4-3-3 formation: Mignolet; Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno; Milner, Lucas, Can; Henderson, Sturridge, Firmino;

Statistics

  • Southampton have won 6, drawn 2 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Liverpool have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Southampton have scored an average of 2.1 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Liverpool have scored an average of 1.5 goals and conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Southampton’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Liverpool’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Southampton joined the Capital One Cup at the third round stage when they smashed six past Milton Keynes Dons without reply. Ronald Koeman’s men set up the quarter-final tie against Liverpool by defeating Premier League bottom dwellers Aston Villa 2-1 at St Mary’s. Recent form is not so hot, the south coast club scraped a 1-0 win at Sunderland thanks to a dubious penalty decision before losing 1-0 at home to Stoke. Southampton couldn’t cope with the intensity with which Manchester City closed them down during the 3-1 defeat at Etihad Stadium at the weekend, tactics successfully deployed by Wednesday’s opponents since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are going well on all fronts under Klopp’s guidance and have won six of the last seven games in all competitions. It took penalties to decide the third round tie against League Two side Carlisle United before defeating Bournemouth 1-0 when Roberto Firmino showed Anfield supporters why the club splashed out £29m for the Brazilian international.

Liverpool are growing into Klopp’s philosophy with every game and are further strengthened by the return of game changing players. It would be no surprise to see Liverpool go all the way in the League Cup, starting with victory against Southampton at St Mary’s.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction and Football Tips -20/02/15 14:52 read →

Premier League football tips – Southampton vs Liverpool prediction

Liverpool’s form shows no sign in deserting them as they travel to St Marys, having only lost once in their last 15 matches in all competitions. By switching to 3 at the back, Brendan Rodgers seems to have tightened things up defensively, allowing his attacking players to try and express the kind of creativity witnessed last season.

Southampton have only managed 1 win from their last 3 games, which game courtesy of a late winner against QPR. The single goal from that win is also their only goal they have scored in their last 3 matches. It’s becoming clear, especially considering their excellent defensive record, Ronald Koeman’s team are relying on their solidity to win points.

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Southampton have scored an average of 1.1 goals and conceded an average of 0.7 goals per game.
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Liverpool have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 0.5 goals per game.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 2 of Southampton’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Liverpool’s previous 10 matches.
  • Liverpool have beaten Southampton both times in their previous 2 matches, scoring 5 goals in the process.

With Ryan Bertrand still suspended plus Jay Rodriguez and Emmanuel Mayuka still out with injury, Koeman will be hoping that both Morgan Schneiderlin and Toby Alderweireld are fit to start the match. Liverpool will definitely be without Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva through injury but Raheem Sterling could be back in the starting line-up, having come on against Beskitas in mid-week.

This match has the makings of being a tight game, with Southampton possibly trying to play like the away team, keeping it tight and hitting Liverpool on the break. It will also be interesting, to see how Liverpool cope after playing on Thursday night.
