Southampton take on Sunderland in the EFL Cup this Wednesday. Read the match predictions to find out why Saints are the betting tip to progress to the next round.

Southampton vs Sunderland Preview

Southampton bounced back from a disappointing night in the Europa League to draw 1-1 away at Manchester City on Sunday. That result came the day after Sunderland slumped to yet another defeat, this time losing 1-0 away to West Ham United after conceding in injury time.

Saints spurned chances against Inter which prompted both Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez to be withdrawn and the attacking pair could remain out of favour here. Nathan Redmond opened the scoring away to City and could force Dusan Tadic into a more withdrawn role. At the back, Maya Yoshida is in contention to rotate with Jose Fonte.

Sunderland will look on the EFL Cup as a welcome distraction to what has been a fruitless league campaign so far. David Moyes range the changes for the trip to West ham and may opt for a similar setup, as his side almost held on for a draw. That would mean the likes of Papy Djilobodji and Paddy McNair starting from the bench while Victor Anichebe will be hoping to start up-front if Jermain Defoe is rested.

Team Predictions Southampton vs Sunderland

Sunderland 4-5-1 formation: Pickford; van Aanholt, O’Shea, Kone, Javi Manquillo; Khazri, Pienaar, Ndong, Rodwell, Watmore; Anichebe

Southampton vs Sunderland Prediction

Southampton were in the ascendancy when enjoying a 3-1 home win over Burnley but could not produce that killer instinct when losing 1-0 away to Inter in the Europa League. They gave as good as they got against the league leaders on Sunday and should find this a lot easier.

Sunderland battled back to draw 1-1 at home to West Brom but couldn’t take that momentum into their next game and were comfortably beaten 2-0 away to fellow strugglers Stoke. It looked as though they were going to get a point at the Olympic Stadium but they let in a late goal and look devoid of confidence.

A solid defence has been key to Southampton’s rise up the table; they’ve let in just 4 goals in the last 10 matches, keeping 6 clean sheets in the process. This is a stark contrast to Sunderland who are averaging less than a goal per game and their only shutout came against Shrewsbury Town.

Both of Sunderland’s wins this season have come in this competition but I think their journey will end at St Mary’s. Southampton should prove too difficult for the visitors to break down and I fancy them to win by a comfortable 2 goal cushion.
