Aberdeen are level on points with Rangers and manager Derek McInnes is looking for his side to cement its status as the second best side in Scotland.
Striker Adam Rooney came off the bench to score the last minute winner in the 1-0 League Cup victory against St Johnstone on Thursday and will be hoping to make the starting line up against Rangers this weekend. McInnes has been patiently waiting for his forwards to find their touch in front of goal and will be happier with his options after Jayden Stockley got off the mark for the season in the 3-1 win at Dundee in the Premiership last Sunday.
Rangers have been making the news for the wrong reasons this week, with Joey Barton disgracing himself once again and Kenny Miller getting arrested following an incident after the Gers’ 5-1 defeat in the Old Firm game last month.
Barton will miss the game due to a three-week ban but Miller, who has scored twice in the Premiership so far this season, is expected to be available. Martyn Waghorn scored a hattrick in the 5-0 win over Queen of the South to press his claims for a start on the right.

Aberdeen go into Sunday’s lunchtime clash on the back of two successive wins this week, the 3-1 league victory at Dundee at the weekend and the 1-0 win at home to St Johnstone in the cup in midweek. The Dons had previously been frustrated by Inverness Caledonian who held on for a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie one week after Aberdeen’s 4-1 defeat to champions Celtic in Glasgow.
Aberdeen are unbeaten if five home games in all competitions so far this season where they have only conceded three times and scored five.
Rangers have a superior record in head to heads against Aberdeen, winning six of the last seven meetings. However the Gers have a long way to go to recapture their glory years as shown in the 5-1 defeat at Celtic Park two weeks ago.
Five goals in the midweek League Cup game will have given the club a lift in the face of some bad publicity but, regardless, they have not won in the last three league games and must up their game if they are to challenge for a place in Europe next season.
Rangers lost all four games against their biggest rivals in the Championship last season and may fold again when confronted with Aberdeen who are one of the strongest sides in the Premiership.
