Wimbledon Predictions | Ladies First Round

Having won both major tournaments in 2015, Serena Williams is half-way to a calendar year Grand Slam. However, the last time the American won Wimbledon was in 2012 and exits in the fourth and third rounds since then, shows Williams has not been at her best at SW19 recently. That being said, the world number one should be able to progress easily in to the second round, having drawn Russian qualifier Margarita Gasparyan. Odds of 20/1 with Bet365 for a Gasparyan win reflect this.

With many of the favourites, such as Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova, being handed what appear to be straight forward first round matches, we have to look lower down the seeds bracket to find any value.

Seeded 12th for Wimbledon is Eugenie Bouchard. The Canadian pulled out of her third round match at Eastbourne with an abdominal problem and has failed to progress beyond the round of 16 in any tournament since the Australian Open. Although Bouchard’s opponent, Ying-Ying Duan, has come through the qualifying process, this means she is in form and at 11/4 with SkyBet, could cause an upset.

Elsewhere, the draw has produced a close match in terms of world rankings, as Flavia Pennetta takes on Zarina Diyas, a player ranked just ten places below her. Diyas managed to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, which was her debut, whereas Pennetta has only reached that stage twice in twelve attempts. Diyas is 5/4 with Bet365 to make it to the second round in 2015.

In terms of our first round Wimbledon ladies winner prediction we are going for Angelique Kerber. The German put in a good performance, winning in Nottingham and although she’s in a tough looking quarter, the 25/1 with Bet365 is tempting at this stage.
