Wimbledon Predictions | Ladies Semi-finals

The match that many people have been waiting at Wimbledon 2015 is almost upon us, as Serena Williams takes on Maria Sharapova in the ladies semi-finals.

Serena Williams, the number one seed, has had a less than comfortable route through to the semi-finals. A two set win over her sister Venus, was sandwiched by tough three set victories over Heather Watson and Victoria Azarenka. At times, Williams has looked to be struggling on court, both physically and emotionally, yet has still come through her matches. The pressure of the calendar year Grand Slam is building, as a place in the Wimbledon final beckons.

Maria Sharapova defeated Coco Vandeweghe in the quarter-finals and has her return to thank for the victory. Winning almost 50% of her receiving points, Sharapova created 11 break point opportunities during the match. However, considering the Russian has not defeated Williams in 11 years, she has to be considered the underdog for this match. Williams has won the last 16 matches between the players, including the Australian Open final in January.

Williams has certainly had the tougher run to the semi-finals but she also looks battle-hardened and ready to scrap for every point. The world number one may give up a set to Sharapova but it’s highly doubtful she will leave the court without a place booked in the final.

Serena Williams is 3/1 with Bet365 to defeat Maria Sharapova in three sets.

The second semi-final, sees Garbine Muguruza take on Agnieszka Radwanska. This will be Muguruza’s first major semi-final of her career, after the 21 year old defeated Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets. Having left both Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki in her wake earlier in the tournament, the Spaniard will be full of confidence.

Radwanska will be playing her fourth career Grand Slam semi-final and has significant experience over Muguruza in these big matches. The pole will be targeting Muguruza’s second serve as an avenue to win the match and the Spaniard will need to improve in this area in order to progress. It’s worth remembering however, that Muguruza has defeated Radwanska in their two meetings this year and if the Spaniard gains momentum, she will be difficult to stop.

With that in mind, Garbine Muguruza is 3/1 with Bet365 to make the final in three sets.
