Three Cheltenham Festival Ante-Post Outsiders To Consider

Three Cheltenham Festival Ante-Post Outsiders To Consider

With the National Hunt season now in full-swing, we have identified a trio of Cheltenham bets that could be worth a nibble in the ante-post markets. The 2017 Cheltenham Festival runs from Tuesday 14th until Friday 17th March. It is the highlight of the jumps racing calendar, featuring the sport’s best horses and jockeys.

Champion Hurdle Ante-Post Tip

As is so often the case at the festival, this market is heavily influenced by horse from the Willie Mullins stable. Annie Power is best odds 5/2 at the time of writing but could swerve the big race in favour of the Ryanair Hurdle, so it’s hard to be confident there. Stablemate Faugheen won the race in 2015 and would take all the beating if running to scratch but the horse has not been seen since winning the Irish equivalent almost a year ago.

Nichols Canyon has good form at Prestbury Park while Yanworth, Yorkhill, Vroum Vroum Mag and the New One are all notable entrants too. However, it’s Apples Jade that makes the each-way appeal at this stage, available at odds of 25/1 with Betway.

Gordon Elliott’s filly chased Ivanovich Gorbatov up the hill in the latest running of the Triumph Hurdle but turned the tables on that runner at Aintree the following month. She’s since won at Punchestown and ran Irving close in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, before landing a Fairyhouse Grade 1 at the expense of Vroum Vroum Mag last time out.

World Hurdle Ante-Post Tip

It was difficult to not be impressed by Uknowhatimeanharry’s success under Barry Geraghty in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. The improving eight-year-old has now won his last seven races and is now as short as 5/2 for the World Hurdle. If this horse turns up in the same form come March, then he should be in the mix running up the hill at the very least. Again, Faugheen, Nichols Canyon and Vroum Vroum Mag feature in the betting, as does 2014 Champion Hurdle winner Jezki. But at an attractive price of 20/1 (generally), Lil Rockerfeller is a horse with a load of heart that could just cause an upset. Having finished well behind Annie Power in the Champion Hurdle, he battled on gamely on his seasonal reappearance at Wetherby. The Chestnut Gelding then ran Yanworth close in the Coral Hurdle and was best of the rest behind Uknowhatimeanharry at Ascot on Saturday.

Gold Cup Ante-Post Tip

Thistlecrack will take the world of beating if making the lineup for National Hunt’s blue riband but odds of 7/2 are short enough. Cue Card needed the run in the Charlie Hall and looked mightily impressive when landing the Betfair Chase by 15 lengths from 2015 Gold Cup winner Coneygree and is rightfully respected. Djakadam has been runner-up in this twice, most recently behind last year’s winner Don Cossack. Valseur Lido is another interesting prospect, having beaten the classy Silviniaco Conti in a Grade 1 in Ireland on his last start. One horse that is almost certain to make the lineup is Smad Place who makes each-way appeal. The gallant grey has ran well in defeat this term but generally saves his best for Cheltenham. This course winner has completed both starts in the Gold Cup to date and looks to have a measure of the fences at Prestbury Park. Smad Place has gone well on Cheltenham trials day in the past and it would be no surprise to see the Sportingbet’s current odds of 50/1 disappear, if that’s the case come January.
