Newcastle United vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction, Betting Tips and Preview
Newcastle United take on Sheffield Wednesday in a televised Championship match on Boxing Day. Read the match predictions to find out why a home win is the betting tip at St James’ Park. The Magpies stayed top after their 1-2 win away to Burton Albion last weekend while the Owls remain in contention for a playoff berth after their narrow 1-0 win at home to relegation candidates Rotherham United.
Newcastle United vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview
Newcastle will be missing Jonjo Shelvey for this match, as he begins a 5 game ban. That could mean a return to the starting XI for Jack Colback, though Vurnon Anita is another option to move into the midfield. Massadio Haidara, Rob Elliott, Rolando Aarons and Daryl Murphy are all out injured for the hosts. Dwight Gayle will once again lead the line, looking to improve on his impressive haul of 17 goals for the season.
Sheff Wed will once again be without the suspended Fernando Forestieri, so Steven Fletcher is set to continue as the focal point of the attack after keeping his nerve to score a dramatic late penalty last time out. Keiran Lee will need to be on his best behaviour here, as a booking will incur a suspension. With no fresh injury concerns, the visitors could name an unchanged side.

Newcastle United vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction
Newcastle have recovered from the little wobble they had a few weeks back and come into this game on a three match winning streak. Brighton had twice played first and temporarily went top before Newcastle beat Birmingham 4-0 and Wigan 0-2 respectively, demonstrating their ability to hand the pressure as favourites to win the Championship. They closed the game out well away to Burton and will be looking to keep momentum here.
Sheffield Wednesday have put together a good run of form and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in the playoffs at the end of the season. However, They slipped up in their last away game, losing 2-1 to Reading and needed a late penalty to overcome Rotherham last time out. I have no doubt that they’ll be fired up for the trip to St James’ Park and expect them to raise their game.
Newcastle have won 11 of their last 13 Championship matches and have scored at least twice in 9 of their last 11. Sheffield Wednesday will make this a contest, of that I’m sure but the home side should prevail here. It’s interesting that the Magpies have seen over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 home games and that statistic is reflected in the betting tips.
