Monaco vs Bordeaux Preview

Monaco are unbeaten in their last five, scoring on average 3.2 goals in those games. They certainly haven’t had trouble finding the net lately even without their top scorer Radamel Falcao who is currently out with a thigh muscle injury sustained during their 3-2 home win against Lyon. Leonardo Jardim’s side are 2nd in Ligue 1 on 57 points and are currently battling it out with Marseille and Lyon for the 2nd guaranteed Champions League spot.

Monaco will be disappointed to come away with just a point in their last match away to Toulouse. After going 3-1 down, the home side showed the fighting spirit that we see so often when teams get caught up in relegation battles. A penalty, converted by Andy Delort in the 78th minute and a late equaliser from Yaya Sanogo was enough to give Toulouse a point and move them out of the bottom three. For Monaco, it means that there are now only two points separating themselves and Marseille meaning picking up three points on Friday is essential in holding onto second place.

Bordeaux sit in 8th place in Ligue 1, 14 points on 4th-placed Lyon, who currently claim the Europa League spot, and 8 points off the bottom three. They’re unlikely to get caught up in a relegation battle and even more unlikely to catch Lyon and so Gus Poyet’s side look destined to finish amongst the likes of Nice and Rennes in the mid-top half of the table.

After going on a 4-game consecutive winning streak, Bordeaux came away with nothing against Marseille and only managed a 0-0 draw when they hosted Nice on Sunday. A trip to Monaco won’t be any easier and Poyet’s men have only picked up 15 points from a possible 42 on the road, scoring just 14 goals in the process. Compare that to Monaco who have dropped just 7 points at home all season and things start to look a little bleak for the visitors.

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Bordeaux have scored an average of 1.1 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game

Monaco vs Bordeaux Prediction

Monaco are clearly favourites for this match. They have the most to play for with challenging to 2nd place and have been scoring for fun lately. There have been over 2.5 goals in 8 of Monaco’s last 10 games and although Bordeaux are generally quite tough to break down, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the home side put three past them. If Radamel Falcao is able to return from injury in time then he would boost Monaco’s strikeforce even more and so we can’t see past a home win in this game.
