Verona are second bottom of Serie A and are fighting to remain a top-flight club next season. Fabio Pecchia’s side are two points from safety thanks to two consecutive wins over Torino and Chievo at home. Those two victories ended a run of three consecutive defeats and seven defeats in eight. They’ll be going into Sunday’s fixture high on confidence and firmly believing that they can get out of the relegation zone and potentially move into 16th place in the league. Verona have beaten the likes on Fiorentina and AC Milan so far this season and so a victory against Atalanta will not seem unachievable to them on Sunday.
Rômulo returns to Verona’s starting lineup as the midfielder returns from suspension. Moise Kean, Mattia Valoti and Alessio Cerci will all miss Sunday’s fixture through injury. Fabio Pecchia will opt for a 4-4-2 formation with Kean being out with Ryder Matos and Bruno Petković leading the line.
Atalanta have hit a bit of bad form which has seen them drop to 8th in the league. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are now six points adrift of AC Milan in sixth position and eleven off Inter Milan who occupy the last of the Europa League spots. With eleven games remaining there is still time for Atalanta to close the gap but they need to start picking up points which has been a problem for them of late. Gasperini’s men have now only managed one win in their last eight games and weren’t good enough to take anything away from their game on Wednesday evening when they were beaten 2-0 away to Juventus. Atalanta started the new year with a string of positive results on the road. They picked up six wins from seven on their travels but have now managed just one win in five.
Gasperini’s side are in a bit of a rut and need to snap out of it soon if they are going to challenge for a Europa League spot. They’re playing Verona at a bad time with the hosts hoping to make it three wins in a row and Sunday’s match could turn out to be a very tough game for them.
Atalanta have no players out injured but Gianluca Mancini will start his suspension after being shown a red card in their 2-0 defeat to Juventus on Wednesday evening.
