Espanyol take on Deportivo in La Liga this Friday. Read the match predictions to find out why an away win is the betting tip at Estadi Cornellà-El Prat. This is the first game back after the Spanish winter break where Espanyol signed off with a penalty loss to Alcorcon after drawing 1-1 with them in a Copa del Rey replay. Meanwhile, Deportivo remain in the cup for now, having drawn 2-2 with Alaves to force a replay.

Espanyol vs Deportivo Preview

Espanyol will continue with Roberto between the sticks, as first choice goalkeeper Diego Lopez is out with a knee injury. Leo Baptistao will also miss out, which should see Felipe Caicedo get the chance to partner Gerard Moreno up front. Defenders Víctor Sánchez and Javi López are both slight doubts but should be able to make the starting XI.

Deportivo look set to bring in Bruno Gama to the right wing, as Carles Gil is out with a knee injury. On the opposite flank, Marlos Moreno is nailed on to start, now that Ryan Babel has left the club. Joselu could start on the bench here and be used as an impact sub, with Florin Andone leading the line.

Team Predictions Espanyol vs Deportivo

Espanyol 4-4-2 formation: Roberto; Caricol, Reyes, Lopez, Sanchez; Piatti, Fuego, Jurado, Perez; Caicedo, Moreno

Deportivo 4-2-3-1 formation: Tyton; Navarro, Sidnei, Albentosa, Juanfran; Guilherme, Borges; Moreno, Colak, Gama; Andone

Espanyol vs Deportivo Betting Tips

  • Espanyol have won 4 drawn 5 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Deportivo have won 3 drawn 3 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Espanyol have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 1.0 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Deportivo have scored an average of 2.1 goals and conceded an average of 1.7 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Espanyol’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Deportivo’s previous 10 matches

Espanyol vs Deportivo Prediction

Having made heavy weather of their 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon, Espanyol were never likely to match city rivals Barcelona and the 4-1 defeat at Camp Nou was largely expected. However, Los Periquitos were well below par against Alcorcon who play in the Segunda Division and will need to up their game here.

Deportivo were desperately unlucky not to get anything against league leaders Real Madrid from their visit to the Bernabeu (see video above). They followed up by winning back-to-back matches, beating Osasuna 2-0 and Real Betis 3-1 respectively. That was followed by a thrilling draw with Alaves and it’s clear that Depor are intent on attacking teams at the moment.

The visitors arrive having scored at least twice in each of their last five matches in all competitions. With this in mind, I think the bookies may have underestimated Depor. Espanyol have been good at home this season but their form tailed off before Christmas and I am banking on them coming up short here.
