Champions League preview – Shakhtar Donetsk vs PSG prediction

Having been shown a red card against Real Madrid on match day one, Taras Stepanenko is suspended for this game. Maksym Malyshev is likely to come in to the team and join Fred in the central of midfield. Shakhtar’s only other doubt is full-back Viacheslav Shevchuk.

PSG manager Laurent Blanc has all his players available for selection for their first away trip in this season’s Champions League. Right-back Serge Aurier is back from suspension and should start as part of the back four, with PSG opting for a front three of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani.

Possible Line-ups

Shakhtar Donetsk: 4-2-3-1 formation: Pyatov; Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Azevedo; Malyshev, Fred; Marlos, Taison; Alex Teixeira; Gladkiy

PSG: 4-3-3 formation: Trapp; Aurier, Luiz, Silva, Maxwell; Motta, Matuidi, Verratti; Di Maria, Ibrahimovic, Cavani

Prediction

Shakhtar started their Champions League campaign in the worst possible way as they went down 4-0 at Real Madrid. Things don’t get any easier for Mircea Lucescu, as his team welcome a strong PSG team to the Ukraine. However, the defeat to Real Madrid was 1 of only 2 losses for Shakhtar in 17 competitive games this season and they have won all 3 domestic league games since their visit to Spain.

PSG have played 9 competitive matches this season and are yet to taste defeat. Laurent Blanc’s team are already 4 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 and seem unlikely to drop below the top spot all season in France. In the Champions League, PSG started with a comfortable 2-0 win over Malmo in Paris and this match should be more of a test of their European credentials. PSG have won only 1 of their last 6 away Champions League games.

That being said, they have more than enough quality to come away from the Ukraine with maximum points.
