Champions League preview – Valencia vs Gent prediction

Valencia are still without goalkeepers Mat Ryan and Diego Alves, therefore, Jaume will continue between the sticks. With Aymen Abdennour also injured, Aderlan Santos should continue in the centre of defence. With news that Alvaro Negredo has fallen out with manager Nuno Santo, the striker will not feature in the team.

Gent have defender Erik Johansson available again and he could make up part of a back three. Midfielder Thomas Foket returns from suspension but manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck will have to make do without Brecht Dejaegere, who is serving a suspension of his own.

Possible Line-ups

Valencia: 4-3-3 formation: Jaume; Cancelo, Mustafi, Santos, Gaya; Parejo, Fuego, Gomes; Piatti, Alcacer, Feghouli

Gent: 3-5-2 formation: Sels; Johansson, Mitrovic, Nielsen; Saif, Kums, Foket, Neto, Asare; Milicevic, Depoitre

Prediction

Valencia will start this match in second place in Group H, having won one and lost one of their opening two games. Their campaign got off to a poor start with defeat at home to Zenit but the La Liga outfit recovered well to take maximum points away to Lyon. Currently sitting 8th in La Liga, Valencia recorded a good 3-0 win over Malaga at the weekend but have won only one of their last four Champions League home matches.

Gent travel to Spain sitting third in Group H, with just a point to their name. However, they have done well on their Champions League debut, losing by a single goal away to Zenit and picking up a point in a 1-1 draw with Lyon at home. The defeat at Zenit was Gent’s only loss of the season so far and they are undefeated in the Belgium Pro League after 11 games. Estadio de Mestalla can be a difficult place to go but Gent will be confident they can make a game of it.

This could be a close game, Gent are well organised and could prove tough to break down.
