Champions League preview – Manchester City vs Dynamo Kiev prediction.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has adopted a 4-4-2 formation when playing against lesser league sides but may revert to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 for the visit of Kiev in the Champions League on Tuesday. It would mean Wilfried Bony dropping back to the bench leaving Sergio Aguero as the lone striker. Yaya Toure missed Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Norwich due to a problem with his heel and will be assessed prior to kick off. Fabian Delph and Samir Nasri are back in training but may have to wait for a call up while Kevin De Bruyne remains sidelined.

Kiev central midfielder Denys Garmash picked up an injury against Karpaty on Friday and is doubtful. Sergiy Rebrov also has injury concerns about midfielders Serhiy Rybalka who played in the first leg and Mykola Morozyuk who hasn’t featured since the squad returned from the winter break. Rebrov must decide between Derlis Gonzalez who was signed for £7m from Basel in the summer or the right-footed Oleg Husyev who has been preferred on the left wing in recent games.

Possible Line-ups

Manchester City 4-4-2 formation: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Otamendi; Fernando, Fernandinho; Silva, Toure, Sterling; Aguero

Dynamo Kiev 4-3-3 formation: Shovkovsky; Vida, Khacheridi, Dragovic, Atunes; Orikhovsky, Veloso, Buyalskyy; Yarmalenko, Teodorczyk, Husyev

Prediction

Manchester City continue to be unpredictable having lost, won and drawn the last three league games since winning the first leg in Kiev a fortnight ago. In that time City have reached the final of the Capital One Cup by defeating Liverpool in a penalty shoot out. With the Premier League title challenge losing momentum, Pellegrini will want to take no chances with City’s progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Kiev were playing their first competitive match for ten weeks when losing the first leg 3-1. Rebrov’s men drew at Oleksandria in the Ukrainian Cup on their next outing and have since won back to back games in the Premier League. Right winger Andriy Yarmolenko has scored in each of those games and has netted 16 times and provided 7 assists in all competitive matches this season.

Manchester City won comfortably in Kiev and although the opposition will be sharper for the second leg, a home victory is expected.
