The two mile five furlong 122yards Pontefract Marathon Handicap on Monday is one of the longest Flat races in existence and with the current going at the West Yorkshire venue on the soft side the stamina of the ten declared participants is sure to be tested to the full. The Donald McCain-trained Sign Manual will have his work cut out to defy top weight of 9st 12lb in the conditions and the likelihood is that the business end of the race will concern those towards the foot of the handicap.

Several of these met earlier this month in the Jamaican Handicap over 2m 2f on the course behind 7-2 winner Almost Gemini but it is the horse who came home in fourth place on that occasion – American Life – who is taken to come out on top this time with both the ground and the marathon trip certain to suit the Sophie Leech-trained nine-year-old.

The mount of Sammy Joe Bell was doing his best work at the finish last time and following several decent efforts over hurdles during the winter, including a comfortable victory at Haydock on heavy ground last December, the gelding looks set to win for the first time on the Flat since landing a 1m 4f contest in Germany back in 2012.
Tuscan Gold and Madam Lilibet are both standing dishes at Pontefract and finished in front of American Life the last time they met but don't win very often and a bigger danger to the selection could come in the form of Omid, who, despite running from 9lb out of the handicap, should not be underestimated from the stable that sent out Almost Gemini to win a similar contest earlier this month.
