Horse Racing Tip – 2.10 Chester 06-05-16

To say that the Karl Burke-trained Glenalmond has failed to fulfill expectations since his two-year-old days would be an understatement. This horse got to within a length of subsequent champion sprinter Muhaarar in York’s Gimcrack Stakes on just his second start as a juvenile. He has failed to trouble the judge in nine starts since that effort on the Knavesmire including when seventeenth behind Gleneagles in last season’s 2000 Guineas.

Running off a mark of 107 twelve month’s ago, the son of Iffraaj has dropped a full 20lb due to several disappointing performances but the gelding was asked some serious questions last year against the likes of Magical Memory, Adaay and Limato. The drop in class for Chester’s opening Class 2 Crabbie’s Earl Grosvener Handicap on Thursday makes for a distinct possibility of a return to form for the mount of Joey Haynes.

A close fifth over course and distance off an 8lb higher mark last July, the four-year-old can be forgiven two subsequent runs on soft ground. With the conditions drying out all of the time and an ideal draw in stall three, Glenalmond has a lot going for him in a fairly moderate contest. Early odds of 14-1 could prove generous come post time.
