The best race on Leicester’s Monday evening fixture is the John Ferneley Handicap at 8.10pm in which a field of ten mainly unexposed three-year-olds compete for the extended one-mile contest.

Top weight Bell Heather is sure to prove popular following her promising seasonal reappearance when staying on to finish fourth in a decent Haydock race earlier this month while the Rod Millman-trained Sir Roderick is sure to appreciate dropping back in trip after possibly finding Salisbury’s mile and a quarter too far in the gelding’s hat-trick attempt recently.

Chester Street and Dubai’s Secret are another two who are capable of running well but it is Roger Varian’s Absolute Zero who is taken to build on the promise he showed as a juvenile last season. Thrown in at the deep end for his debut in York’s Convivial Maiden Stakes at the Ebor Festival the son of Cape Cross made little show behind the winner Beautiful morning (neck second in a Newbury Listed race at the weekend) but with that experience under his belt proved a different proposition on his second start.

Finding only Valitop too good in a competitive Sandown maiden with some promising types behind, Absolute Zero was sent off a well-backed 4-7 favourite next time on the back of that effort. The mount of Paul Mulrennan failed to settle in the early stages of that Beverley maiden, coming home in third place after traveling smoothly until his initial keenness took its toll.

In-form jockey Andrea Atzeni takes over on this occasion (one of only two mounts on the card) and providing the talented rider can settle his mount the pair should take plenty of beating.
