Ante-Post Tip – The Derby 04-06-16
The most significant trial for the Epsom Derby in recent years is undoubtedly York’s Dante Stakes, as year after year the form proves top class. Last year’s renewal could not have worked out any better as subsequent Epsom and Curragh Derby winners, Golden Horn and Jack Hobbs filled the first two places in the Group 2 contest on the Knavesmire.
While those concerned at the business end of this year’s trial may not go on to achieve such exalted success as enjoyed by the John Gosden-trained duo the first two home, Wings Of Desire and Deauville, look sure to go close in the world’s most famous Flat race this Saturday.
At around the 9-2 mark Wings Of Desire currently disputes favouritism for the Classic along with Ballydoyle's US Army Ranger. But there is reason to believe that the neck that separated the two principles at York may be reversed at Epsom making the 14-1 available about Deauville with William Hill excellent each-way value and top of our horse racing predictions for today.
Due to the fact that the John Gosden colt was unraced as a juvenile many expect the York form to be confirmed but whereas the son of Pivotal was having his third outing within a month and therefore supremely fit the mount of Ryan Moore, like the majority of Aidan O'Brien three-year-olds, will almost certainly improve for his seasonal reappearance.
While Moore has been linked with Ballydoyle's supposed first string, it would be no surprise if he were to jump ship prior to final declaration time, in which case the 14-1 on offer about Deauville would soon turn into a single-figure price.
Cloth Of Stars, Ulysses, Moonlight Magic and Massaat are others with genuine credentials but no form looks stronger than that of the Dante making Deauville a potential market mover come the big day.
