Epsom’s opening three-year-old handicap on Derby day features plenty of well-bred unexposed contenders from top stables, none more so than the likely Sir Michael Stoute-trained favourite Poet’s Word who, on the back of just three promising outings, may prove to be much better than an 87-rated performer. But that is sure to be reflected in the odds available about Ryan Moore’s mount so at a much bigger price it could pay to keep faith with the Paul Henderson inmate Medburn Dream who is on a four-timer following wins at Windsor, Epsom and Chepstow this season.

The son of Showcasing showed nothing in three runs as a juvenile but has proved a different proposition this term, making all to win his three starts, a trait which will stand the colt in good stead in a contest which is likely to feature plenty of hard luck stories on this notoriously difficult terrain.

From stall seven Richard Kingscote can soon head affairs, as Medburn Dream did under Franny Norton on the course back in April, and despite running over this mile and a quarter trip for the first time should prove very hard to peg back at the business end of the race. As well as Poet’s Word, Cartago and Dark Devil are the pair most likely to be chasing the selection home in the closing stages.
