Many of the top players have decided to sit out this weeks FedEx St Jude Classic in order to fine tune their games for next week’s US Open, leaving us with a rather depleted looking field for this year’s renewal in Memphis. The Par 70, 7,239yd TPC Southwind is a well established venue on the PGA Tour which was toughened up in 2004 with new trees and bunkers added, as well as the fifth hole being converted from an easy Par 5 to a difficult Par 4. This has left us with a pretty stern Par 70 test, which features average sized fairways and smallish raised greens with water in play on ten of the holes.

Before selecting our golf tips it’s useful to know that this layout tends to play to the strengths of good quality ball strikers who historically have featured high in the Greens in Regulation (GIR), but a couple of recent winners definitely fit more into the category of power hitters. Baking hot sunshine and light breezes will await the assembled field this week.

St Jude Classic Golf Tips

Dustin Johnson 13/2 E/W Paddy Power (7 Places) Much has been said in the media in recent weeks about the inability of Dustin Johnson to close the deal in recent months, particularly with sloppy rounds of putting over the weekend. Plenty of this criticism is justified however, I would not underestimate DJ's chance this week of repeating his 2012 win at TPC Southwind. The laid back American has been out of the winners circle for a while, but he has posted seven Top 10 finishes in his 12 starts this year hinting a further win must be surely just around the corner. This could well be the week in such a weak looking field lacking any real depth, with many of the players also having to endure a potentially stamina sapping 36 hole US Open qualifier on Monday. I think DJ has a point to prove to not only himself, but also to his many doubters, and with Paddy Power giving us 7 places at 1/5 the odds, it has the look of an each-way bet to nothing, with the added possibility of a trade out in running play. Colt Knost 40/1 E/W Paddy Power (7 Places) The improving Colt Knost is fancied to go well this week on a track that should really suit his strong tee to green game. His latest outing a couple of weeks ago at the Dean and Deluca Invitational was disappointing on the face of it, but don't be fooled by his Tied 67th place finish. His usual solid tee to green game was still there, but to put it bluntly he putted like a 10 handicapper. Hopefully we will not have a repeat this week. I'm happy to concentrate more on his previous two outings where he posted a Tied 3rd place finish at the Players Championship and his Tied 4th place finish at the Byron Nelson the following week. Both of these stellar performances were on layouts which reward solid accurate ball strikers, similar to the test he will face at TPC Southwind. This bodes well for this week where the American has already posted Tied 12th and Tied 15th finishes.
