Despite a dry forecast for Saturday, the soft ground which currently prevails at Royal Ascot is unlikely to change very much prior to the start of the week’s big handicap sprint, the Wokingham Stakes on the final day of horseracing’s showcase meeting.

A maximum field of 28 will charge up the Ascot straight and if earlier results are anything to go by those drawn low look to have an advantage at this year’s royal extravaganza. Lowest of all in stall one is Buckstay who is likely to be finishing best of all but with the six furlong trip a little on the sharp side for Jamie Spencer’s mount it could be worth taking a chance on a return to form from Poyle Vinnie who would prove hard to beat if recapturing his best efforts of last season.

Excellently berthed in stall ten the Michael Appleby-trained gelding is at his best with plenty of cut in the ground, as the six-year-old showed when storming home in the Scottish Steward's Cup at Hamilton last July. Going on to run the Group class Don't Touch to half a length when conceding 3lb in the Ayr Gold Cup, a performance which would see Alistair Rawlinson's mount go close if reproducing at the Berkshire venue. While Poyle Vinnie has been slow to hit form this season there should be no excuses this time with conditions to suit making the guaranteed 33-1 (5 places) available with bet365 an attractive proposition.
