Newcastle United play host to Brentford in the Championship this Saturday. Read the match predictions to find out why Newcastle are the betting tip to get three points at St James’ Park.

Newcastle vs Brentford Preview

Newcastle signed off for the international break with a 0-1 win away at Rotherham to move up to third in the table, just 3 points behind leaders Huddersfield Town. Meanwhile, Brentford played out a drab 0-0 at home with Wigan and have dropped out of the play-off positions.

Rafa Benitez has a decision to make after Christian Atsu scored the winner last time out. He could be retained at the expense of Matt Ritchie once more, or Gouffran could make way on the opposite flank. The Toon Army have been crying out for two up-front but it’s likely to be as you were with Diame behind Gayle and Mitrovic on the bench.

Brentford boss Dean Smith looks to be settled on his best XI, so is unlikely to ring the changes here. Scott Hogan has 7 Championship goals to his name and will lead the line in front of Sawyers, Vibe and Clarke. Josh McEachran and Lewis MacLeod both came off the bench last time and are expected to have a watching brief again.

Team Predictions Newcastle vs Brentford

Brentford 4-2-3-1 formation: Bentley; Bjelland, Egan, Dean, Colin; Yennaris, McCormack; Sawyers, Vibe, Clarke; Hogan

Newcastle vs Brentford Prediction

Newcastle failed to capitalise on a hatful of chances away to Aston Villa and were inevitably made to pay with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw. They then looked dead and buried at 1-3 down before producing a superb fightback to beat Norwich 4-3. Last time out they did a professional job in edging a well organised Rotherham side.

Brentford hadn’t given too much away prior to losing 3-1 away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Back at home they enjoyed a 4-1 rout against Reading before nothing would give in the bore-draw against Wigan.

The hosts have kept 7 clean sheets while the visiting side have prevented the opposition from scoring on 5 occasions. Looking at the last 10 matches, these sides have not been involved in many high scoring games, so a tense tactical duel is anticipated.

Newcastle have had to bide their time in a number of matches this season and it could be more of the same here. With just one defeat in 11 matches the Magpies appear to have found their groove and I’m tipping them to claim a narrow victory.
