England take on Scotland in a World Cup qualifying match this Friday. Read the match predictions to find out why the Three Lions are the betting tip to win at Wembley Stadium. England come into this game as Group F leaders after a 0-0 draw with Slovenia while Scotland were beaten 3-0 away to Slovakia and have a job on to qualify.

England vs Scotland Preview

England are without Danny Drinkwater and Fraser Forster but it’s hoped that Kyle Walker will shake off the knock that saw him withdrawn in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the weekend. Jack Wilshere is back in the squad and may see some action from the bench, while Dele Alli’s injury means he misses the call up and Wayne Rooney can be afforded a more advanced role.

Scotland have Stephen Kingsley and Lee Wallace as options for the left-back berth with Callum paterson expected to continue his fledgling international career on the opposite side of a four-man defence. Gordon Strachan is under pressure and will need to get this squad selection right, or it could be the last one he makes.

Team Predictions England vs Scotland

Scotland 4-3-3 formation: Marshall; Kingsley, Hanley, Martin, Paterson; Fletcher, McArthur, Bannan; Snodgrass, Fletcher, Ritchie

England vs Scotland United Prediction

England have something of a cloud hanging over them at the moment but they remain unbeaten in this World Cup qualification pool and are top of the table. A 0-1 win away at Slovakia preceded a comfortable 2-0 home victory against Malta before the draw in Slovenia. The Three Lions may not be pulling up any trees but the results are positive and their defence is yet to be breached.

Gordon Strachan’s job may be resting on this game, such is his unpopularity North of the border. Scotland were the only home nation not to make it to Euro 2016 and a poor start to this qualification process leaves them with an uphill struggle to get to Russia. The Tartan Army had something to shout about in a 1-5 victory away to Malta but a 1-1 home draw with Lithuania was a reality check and the latest setback against Slovakia has intensified the pressure on the head coach.

England have won four of the past 5 meetings with Scotland and have scored three goals in the last two matches against their rivals. A home win will consolidate top spot and leave Scotland in deep trouble, as well as giving the England fans something to sout about after a difficult few months. I’m tipping the Three Lions to get the job done but expect Scotland to make it a scrap.
