Bubba Watson
The Florida-based leftie has been plagued by streaky performances since emerging as a potential great with an outstanding rookie year in 2006. He’s proved he can beat anyone on his day but relying on him when the money’s down is another matter.
Bubba is a two-time winner of the Green Jacket and knows what it takes on a course that has changed little in the last 10 years. He showed good form ahead of both Masters victories in 2012 and 2014, and having won twice already this year, he’s hit terrific form at just the right time.
Jordan Spieth
It’s impossible to ignore the credentials of Jordan Spieth who has been installed favourite to win the Masters with most bookies. The 24-year-old has made four appearances at Augusta, winning in 2015, finishing runner-up 2014 and 2016 before finishing tied 11th last year.
His scoring stats are incredible, averaging 281.5 almost two strokes better than Mr Consistent himself, Paul Casey. Spieth’s average single round score is 70.4, that’s a stroke better than any of the greats who played at least 25 rounds at Augusta.
Spieth has struggled for form since narrowly missing out on his second FedEx title last autumn but showed glimpses of a revival at the WGC Match Play. His putting will be the deciding factor and given his magical performances on Augusta’s lightening fast greens, it would be folly to leave him out of calculations.
Justin Rose
Sergio Garcia ended years of near misses when winning the Masters last year and it could well be time for Justin Rose to don the Green Jacket after a string of consistent performances at Augusta.
Rose has not finished outside the top 15 in the last four years including 2nd in 2015 and tied 2nd last year. He is seven strokes better than any player who has completed four rounds of the Masters in the last five years.
His victory in the 2013 US Open proves his has the temperament to see out a major win and his form coming into the Masters is excellent with a win at the HSBC Champions along with a third and tied fifth on the PGA Tour this season.

The Course
Augusta is a par 72 course measuring 7,435 yards. The key to winning the Masters is to make eagles and birdies on the four easiest holes and keeping it together round the infamous three holes of Amen Corner.
The four par 5s, (2nd, 5th, 13th and 15th) are the easiest on the course and players who fail to take advantage rarely feature high on the final day. Amen Corner is the combination of the 11th, 12th and 13th holes. The huge crowds and tricky approach to 11 call for nerves of steel and the wicked design of the par 3, 12th means the difference between brilliance and disaster can be measured in millimetres. Then failure to birdie the risk-reward test of 13 can be just as damaging to chances of victory.
