Along with the Investec Derby Epsom boast another Group 1 contest on Saturday in the Coronation Cup for which last season’s King George V1 winner Postponed is sure to go off a short-priced favourite, especially as the son of Dubawi is unbeaten in three starts since that narrow victory over Eagle Top at Ascot.

The ex-Luca Cumani-trained five-year-old, now in the care of Roger Varian, could not have been more impressive in claiming a Group 1 contest in Meydan back in March and is going to prove a tough nut to crack wherever he turns up this season. But the horse will be having his first taste of the unique Epsom course this weekend and as last year’s renewal goes to show this race can often produce a shock result.

While there is no doubt Postponed is the most likely winner at an unappealing 4-6, an each-way investment in a horse with course form plus a victory over an outstanding Derby winner is a much better value option. The filly in question, Arabian Queen, (also by Dubawi and out of the talented but enigmatic mare Barshiba) ran out an easy winner of the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at this meeting 12 months ago when making most of the running. Far from consistent during the rest of the campaign for trainer David Elsworth, Arabian Queen produced possibly the biggest shock of the season when getting the better of Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn in York's Juddmonte International at odds of 50-1 with the likes of The Grey Gatsby and Time Test well behind. A promising second on her seasonal reappearance at Newmarket's Guineas meeting, the filly may well be allowed a soft lead at Epsom and if that proves to be the case she could take some pegging back, making the 16-1 currently available with bet365 and several other bookmakers the ante-post value of the race.
