Saturday 4th June may be all about the most famous Flat race in the world, the Epsom Derby first run in 1780, but for those who enjoy a taste of pure speed the card also features the Investec Corporate Banking “Dash” on the fastest sprint course in the world.
The valuable five-furlong charge was won in dramatic fashion by Duke Of Firenze back in 2013 when jockey Ryan Moore brought his mount through virtually the entire field inside the final furlong to snatch an unlikely victory.
Trained by Sir Michael Stoute on that occasion the son of Pivotal is now in the care of David Griffiths and with just a 6lb penalty (put up 10lb by handicapper) the seven-year-old will be racing off a 1lb lower mark than when successful three years ago.
That penalty was for an impressive victory on York's Knavesmire earlier this month, a reproduction of which should be good enough for a follow-up, providing the gelding encounters a trouble-free passage. That was only his fourth start for Griffiths who excels with sprinters and it would be no surprise if more improvement was still forthcoming.
