Argentina play host to Colombia in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night. Read the match predictions to find out why a home win is the betting tip in San Juan. Argentina suffered a 0-3 defeat away to rivals Brazil at the weekend while Colombia drew 0-0 at home to Chile.

Argentina vs Colombia Preview

Argentina have no fresh injury concerns but manager Edgardo Bauza is under pressure to get a result and may change formation. That could mean Lucas Pratto replacing Gonzalo Higuain in attack and Lionel Messi moving to a wide position opposite Angel Di Maria. Ever Banega could come back into midfield while Pablo Zabaleta may drop to the bench for Gabriel Mercado at right-back.

Colombia will be without first-choice central defenders Yerry Mina and Oscar Murillo who through injury and suspension. That will mean Jeison Murillo and Eder Álvarez Balanta coming in to deputise and the midfield trio of Abel Aguilar, Carlos Sánchez and Macnelly Torres will need to track back. The good news is that Juan Cuadrado returns from suspension and will slot in alongside James Rodríguez behind striker Radamel Falcao.

Argentina vs Colombia Prediction

Argentina find themselves in unfamiliar territory and outside of the qualifying positions after 4 matches without a win. They registered back-to-back 2-2 draws with Venezuela and Peru before a shock 0-1 home defeat to Paraguay. The latest setback against Brazil means they need a result here.

Colombia are just 2 points better off but are crucially in a qualification berth. Also beaten away to Brazil, Colombia’s 0-1 win in Paraguay is their only success in 4 matches after a 2-2 draw at home to Uruguay, prior to the stalemate against Chile last time out.

Los Cafeteros tend not to travel well and have conceded double the amount of goals on their travels, so the absence of Oscar Murillo and Yerry Mina is a blow. Add to that their paltry 2 wins against Argentina over the past 15 meetings and there is a case for Argentina winning this. Considering what’s at stake, this should be a tight and cagey affair, that the hosts can edge.
