Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Preview

Atletico Madrid sit second in La Liga, six points ahead of third-placed Valencia and will feel confident going into this game based on their impressive home form and Valencia’s recent drop in form.

Atletico were recently eliminated from the Copa del Rey, losing 3-1 to Sevilla which will allow them to concentrate on the league and put everything into this game. Atletico remain unbeaten at home in the league this season, conceding only 4 goals at the Wanda and have conceded the least goals in La Liga in total. A win for Atletico will close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona and increase the gap between fourth-placed Real Madrid to an encouraging 11 points.

Valencia started the campaign positively but have seen a recent drop in form with consecutive losses to Real Madrid and Las Palmas in the league and defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey. Their recent away form is also a concern, winning just once in seven away games across all competitions. They also have the second leg of their cup game against Barcelona on Thursday evening which will leave manager Marcelino with a difficult decision of whether or not to rotate his squad for this clash.

Atletico will most likely be without left-back Filipe Luis but will welcome back Diego Costa from injury who will most likely start alongside Antoine Griezmann. Sime Vrsaljko is also available following his ban and will replace Juanfran at right-back.

We may see Marcelino make some changes in his side in light of their second leg against Barcelona on Thursday. Gabriel will partner with Ezequiel Garay in central defence after his suspension and Geoffrey Kondogbia should be available to start although he will be assessed prior to the game following a knock.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Prediction

Atletico Madrid’s solid defence comes up against Valencia’s impressive strike force in a game that could prove to be tight. However, it’s hard to see Atletico dropping all three points here based on their home form which has registered points against the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villareal so far this season.

Antoine Griezmann is back on form after a releatively quiet spell in December and has found the net in Atletico’s last three games. The return of Diego Costa will add more firepower to Atletico’s front line and if he and Griezmann are on form, it’s unlikely that a rotated Valencia side will have enough to break down Atletico’s back four to catch up.
