Austria welcome Republic of Ireland for a World Cup qualifying match this Saturday. Read the match predictions to find out why Austria are the betting tip to win this Group D encounter. In the last round of games Austria gave a good account of themselves when losing 3-2 away to Serbia while Ireland registered a rudimentary 1-3 win away to minnows Moldova.

Austria vs Republic of Ireland Preview

Austria coach Marcel Koller will have to make do without Sebastian Prodl and Zlatko Junuzovic, as they both miss out through injury. Fulham defender Michael Madl, Red Bull Salzburg full-back Stefan Stangl and Altach goalkeeper Andreas Lukse are the three uncapped footballers in the squad.

Rep Ireland are sweating on the fitness of James McClean and John O’Shea. With Shane Long and Daryl Murphy both unavailable through injury, Colorado Rapids striker Kevin Doyle has been handed a recall. James McCarthy is out of but Dundalk’s Andy Boyle and Daryl Horgan are in the squad.

Austria vs Republic of Ireland Prediction

Austria got their campaign off to a perfect start with a 1-2 win away to Georgia. An unfortunate own-goal put them behind against Wales (see video) but they battled back through two goals from Marko Arnautovic to salvage a point, as it ended 2-2. They were unlucky not to get anything away to Serbia last time and will be keen to get back up and running in front of their home fans.

Republic of Ireland drew 2-2 with Serbia in their opening match and were not particularly convincing when beating Georgia 1-0 at home. They got the job done, as expected, in Moldova but this will be a much tougher assignment for Martin O’Neill’s men.

In a wide-open group, there’s still plenty of football to be played. However, Austria will be looking to make amends for a shaky start and Ireland have had a kind run up until this point. Even if the hosts let in the first goal, they’ve shown their ability to battle back into games and I’m tipping them come out on top at Ernst Happel Stadion.
