Borussia Dortmund welcome Sporting Lisbon to Signal-Iduna Park in the Champions League. Read the match predictions to find out why BVB are the betting tip to win on Wednesday night. Dortmund secured an important 1-2 win in the reverse fixture which puts them in a commanding position in Group F while Sporting now need to win to have any chance of progressing to the knockout phase.

Borussia Dortmund vs Sporting Lisbon Preview

Borussia Dortmund are expected to revert to a 3 man defence which would likely see Felix Passlack drop to the bench. Shinji Kagawa could be replaced in midfield by Sebastian Rode with Dembele and Guerreiro the likely wide men. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be looking to add to his 9 goals so far this season as the focal point of Dortmund’s attack.

Sporting Lisbon have to go for this, so Jorge Jesus is expected to start with two up front. Bas Dost will be the furthest man forward with Lazar Markovic his likely partner in attack. Bryan Ruiz and Gelson Martins will occupy the flanks and their supply to the front two could be key to how this match turns out. There should be no changes in defence with the same back four and goalkeeper that kept out Nacional on Friday.

Borussia Dortmund vs Sporting Lisbon Prediction

Borussia Dortmund have been far from convincing since winning in Lisbon a fortnight ago. They had to battle back to draw 3-3 away at plucky Ingolstadt and needed penalties to overcome Union Berlin after a 1-1 draw in the DFB Pokal. They looked assured in defence when holding Schalke to a 0-0 draw at the weekend and are always tough to beat at home.

Sporting’s form has arguably been worse, as they lost more ground in the Primeira Liga. A dramatic late equaliser from Joel Campbell spared them an embarrassing defeat at home to Tondela and they looked out of ideas in attack when drawing 0-0 away to Nacional, a side they’re normally expected to beat.

A positive result for the hosts would secure their path into the last 16 and consign Sporting to the Europa League. I’m expecting Thomas Tuchel to send his side out to do a professional job but given that both sides were involved in bore draws recently, it could be a low-scoring game. Dortmund undoubtedly have more strength in depth and can put out a solid team with fresh legs to edge this game.
