Cardiff sit 4th in the table and a comfortable nine points fron 7th placed Preston who are just outside the playoff zone. However, they are only one point behind 2nd placed Aston Villa and have their eyes set on automatic promotion to the Premier League. After a run of four straight defeats, The Bluebirds are unbeaten in their last five league matches and know that a win on Saturday could see them leapfrog both Derby and Villa into 2nd place given that Villa have a tough match away to 5th placed Fulham at the weekend.
Midfielders Craig Bryson and Aron Gunnarsson and defender Matt Connolly are all unavailable through injury while Gary Madine and Nat Mendez-Laing, who missed Cardiff’s 2-0 win over Bolton on Tuesday, are expected to also remain out.
After a winless run of three games, including two defeats, Middlesbrough picked up a vital 3 points against Reading last weekend with a 2-1 win. Their recent string of bad results have put a dampener on their hopes for a swift return to the Premier League next season but a playoff spot is still achievable should they regain their form. Winger, Adama Traore put in an excellent performance in their win over Reading, grabbing both of Boro’s goals and will look to add to his tally on Saturday.
Boro’s top goalscorer, Britt Assombalonga missed a penalty late in the game against Reading, sending his spot kick high over the crossbar and will likely find himself warming the bench again when the whistle blows. Manager Tony Pulis will be looking for back-to-back wins for only the fourth time this season and will likely name a similar lineup to that which achieved victory over Reading.
