Crotone vs Roma Preview
Crotone sit level on points with Sassuolo and Spal and are only outside of the bottom three on goal difference. Walter Zenga’s side picked up a great 4-1 win at home to Sampdoria on Sunday which lifted them out of the bottom three and will give them confidence going into this weekends match. The hosts were 3-0 up in the first half thanks to two goals from Marcello Trotta and one from Adrian Stoian. Trotta had a chance for a hattrick but failed to convert a penalty in the 23rd minute. Thankfully for Crotone, Stoian was on hand to convert the rebound.
Zenga’s side haven’t been short of goals of late and have averaged 2.7 goals per game in their last three matches. Their victory over Sampdoria was preceded by two disappointing defeats to Spal and Benevento which were both huge chances for Zenga’s side to climb the table away from danger. If the hosts can tighten up at the back and perform as well as they have been in front of goal lately then it’s not unthinkable to see them getting something out of this game.
Zenga will be without Mariano Izco, Ante Budimir, Stefan Simic and Marco Festa through injury while Marcus Rohden is also expected to miss the game.
With Juventus and Napoli battling it out for the Serie A title, Roma are currently the best-of-the-rest and sit in third place in the league with 56 points. They’re being chased by Lazio and Inter Milan for a Champions League spot and with Inter having a game in hand, Eusebio Di Francesco knows his side need to keep picking up points to ensure they secure one.
Roma’s 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the last 16 of the Champions League by Shakhtar Donetsk was followed by a 2-0 defeat at home to AC Milan. Di Francesco seems to have gotten his side back on track since then though as Roma have won their last three including a 4-2 win away to Napoli and a 1-0 victory against Shakhtar in the second leg which see’s them through to the quarterfinals.
The visitors are in good form at the moment and have the second-best defensive record away from home in Serie A, conceding just 8 goals in 13 games. They’ll be confident of picking up three points on Sunday and keeping the pressure on their rivals at the top of the table for a Champions League spot.
Right-back Rick Karsdorp is Roma’s only injured player but club-captain Daniele De Rossi starts his suspension and will likely be replaced by Lorenzo Pellegrini with Alessandro Florenzi taking captain duties.
