Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Preview

Crystal Palace sit two points above the bottom three and face a tough challenge when they host Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday. After a winless run of seven games which included five defeats, Palace picked up three points away to Huddersfield with a 2-0 win. Those vital points lifted Palace out of the bottom three with Southampton taking their place. Roy Hodgson’s side are far from safe but he’ll be hoping that victory will perk his players up for their remaining eight games. Palace have one of the easier set of remaining fixtures following their clash with Liverpool on Saturday with already having played all of the top 7 teams at home and away. If they can pick up even just a point on Saturday, it will put them in good stead for their remaining games with the hope of remaining as a Premier League club next term.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned from injury and made his first appearance of 2018 in Palace’s last game against Huddersfield and will be hoping to land a place in Hodgson’s starting eleven. Mamadou Sakho is also likely to get a place back in the team after increasing his fitness. Wilfried Zaha is a possible doubt after he picked up a minor injury while playing in Ivory Coast’s international friendly. Alexander Sørloth, Joel Ward and Jeffrey Schlupp are also doubts while Julian Speroni, Bakary Sako, Jason Puncheon and Scott Dann remain out through injury.

Liverpool were unbeaten in seven before suffering a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford to Manchester United two weeks ago. They bounced back quickly from that defeat with a 5-0 hamming of Watford and will be hoping for a similar scoreline on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are third in the Premier League, only two points adrift of second-placed Manchester United and are being chased closely by Tottenham who are two points beneath them. Dropping points on Saturday would make United clear favourites of securing second place and Klopp will need his players to perform as they have been in order to keep the pressure on and hope that United slip up. The Reds have been consistent away from home this season and have scored more goals on their travels than any other team. They’ve picked up 27 points from a possible 45 on the road which is the joint second best only behind league leaders Man City.

Joseph Gomez went off with an ankle injury in England’s friendly against the Netherlands on Saturday and will not feature against Palace. Emre Can missed out on his international duty with Germany due to a back injury and is also unlikely to recover in time.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Predictions

Crystal Palace are in desperate need of points to move further away from the bottom three. Their win against Huddersfield two weeks ago will give them confidence but they’ll find it a much tougher task to pick up points when they host Liverpool on Saturday. Hodgson’s side have managed to find the net in 11 of their last 13 games at Selhurst Park and with Liverpool netting in 16 of their last 17 on the road, we’re backing both teams to get on the scoresheet. Klopp’s men have averaged a whopping 2.6 goals in their last 10 games and so it’s hard to see them not outscoring Palace who have averaged less than half that in as many games. We’re backing Klopp to keep the pressure on Mourinho towards the top of the table with an away win which should produce over 2.5 goals.
