Crystal Palace vs Manchester United Preview

Crystal Palace are now winless in their last five games and are just outside of the bottom three on goal difference. Both Swansea and Stoke have winnable games at the weekend against West Ham and Southampton and Crystal Palace could find themselves in the relegation zone come kick-off on Monday.

Roy Hodgson will be frustrated his side didn’t take away a point in their last match against Tottenham. The Eagles couldn’t contain the Premier Leagues top scorer, Harry Kane who found the net in the 88th minute to leave Selhurst Park with all three points. That defeat was Palace’s only second in their last twelve home games where they have proved tough to beat this season.

Hodgson could be without 14 of his players when they host United on Monday. Wilfried Zaha, Connor Wickham, Scott Dann, Jason Puncheon, Jeffrey Schlupp, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Bakary Sako, Julian Speroni, Martin Kelly, Mamadou Sakho all remain injured while Yohan Cabaye remains a doubt after suffering a thigh injury which kept this out of the game against Tottenham last weekend.

Manchester United are second in the league but could drop down to third by Monday if Liverpool take maximum points against Newcastle at Anfield over the weekend. While United’s home form has been solid, they have been inconsistent on the road, suffering defeats to Newcastle and Tottenham in their last four away games and have picked up just 24 points from a possible 42. Goals haven’t been a problem at Old Trafford for Mourinho’s men where they have found the net 31 times in 14 matches. However, on their travels, they’ve scored just 22 and have failed to find the net at all in three of their last four away games. Despite this, Mourinho will be confident his side can take away all three points on Monday against a side which has never beaten United in the Premier League. Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jessie Lingard sealed a 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend and Palace should prove to be much less of competition to The Blues.

Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones will not recover from injury in time for Monday’s match but Mourinho does not have any fresh injury concerns and will likely name the same starting XI that achieved victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford last week.

  • Manchester United have won 7 drawn 1 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Crystal Palace have scored an average of 1 goal and conceded an average of 1.6 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Manchester United have scored an average of 1.6 goals and conceded an average of 0.4 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Crystal Palace’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Manchester United’s previous 10 matches

Crystal Palace vs Manchester United Predictions

Despite United’s patchy away form recently, they should have no trouble taking away three points on Monday. Palace haven’t beaten Man Utd since 1991 and it would be unexpected to see them take away anything from the game. Mourinho generally plays more conservative away from Old Trafford and will want to dominate possession. We’re expecting United to bag a couple of goals which will likely be too much for Hodson’s side to claw back and it’s likely they’ll find themselves in the bottom three next week.

Manchester United have dominated this fixture in recent years and have won the last 5 matches played against Crystal Palace. You have to go all the way back to before the Premier League began in 1991 to find a time Palace last beat United in the league.

Crystal Palace almost took away a point in this fixture last season after a second-half goal from James McArthur cancelled out Paul Pogba’s first-half strike. However, an 88th-minute goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic stole the points from the hosts with the match ending 2-1 to United.
