Crystal Palace take on Newcastle United in Premier League action this Sunday. Read the match predictions to find out why we can see this being a low-scoring affair with both sides leaving with a vital point.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United Preview

There is only one place and two points separating Crystal Palace and Newcastle United in the Premier League table and with relegation looking to be a possibility for any team in the bottom half, 3 points on Sunday would be a welcome addition to either sides tally.

Crystal Palace have relieved a bit of pressure by picking up 7 points from a possible 12 in their last four games, including wins over Southampton and Burnley. Their form has been patchy for most of the season and they are desperate to pick up points against the teams in the lower half of the league to break out of the relegation battle.

Christian Benteke’s form has been poor this season but Palace do have other options for goals in Wilfred Zaha who will start alongside him.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson will be frustrated with injuries to his squad which leaves him without Sakho, Loftus-Cheek, Puncheon and many more.

Newcastle have struggled with scoring goals this season. Rafa Benitez’s first choice, Joselu has underperformed and scored only 4 goals in 19  league appearances. Newcastle fans were holding their breath whether or not a goalscorer would be found before the end of the January transfer window in time for this crucial match. Going through at the last minute, they managed to sign Islam Slimani from Leicester which will give them another striking option for the remainder of the season. However, the Algerian international is a doubt for Sunday’s match at Selhurst Park due to a thigh problem, leaving Benitez with the options of Dwight Gayle and Joselu to lead the line.

Rafa Benitez will be disappointed that his side conceded a late goal and gave away two extra vital points on Wednesday at home to Burnley. However, Newcastle did create chances and Benitez may opt to start both Gayle and Joselu upfront to take advantage of that. United’s other January loan signing, Kenedy, will start and will be hoping to build on his positive debut last Wednesday.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United Prediction

Both sides desperately need points and know that games like this are their best chance of grabbing them. There have been under 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Newcastle last 6 league games and we expect this game to follow-suit with another low-scoring affair.

Crystal Palace have the home advantage here and are in slightly better form. However, Benitez will no-doubt set his team up for this to be a very close game and we can see the match ending in a draw. New signing Kenedy will start on Sunday and inject some pace into Newcastle’s midfield. Slimani is doubtful but if he does feature, he could give Newcastle the goals they’ve been waiting for and could potentially help them bring 3 points up north.
