Euro 2016 preview – England vs Estonia prediction

Defender John Stones has been forced to withdraw from the England squad, meaning a call-up for Kyle Walker. There are also doubts over Wayne Rooney, Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey. Ryan Bertrand will get a chance at left-back with Luke Shaw injured and Theo Walcott may have the opportunity to start up-front, as he has been for Arsenal.

Estonia manager Magnus Pehrsson has a full squad to pick from, with no injuries or suspensions to worry about. Striker Ats Purje is set to play a lone role up-front, as Estonia pack the midfield in an attempt to frustrate their hosts.

Possible Line-ups

England: 4-2-3-1 formation: Hart; Clyne, Cahill, Smalling, Bertrand; Milner, Carrick, Barkley; Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Walcott

Estonia: 4-5-1 formation: Aksalu; Teniste, Jaager, Klavan, Pikk; Zenjov, Lindpere, Dimitrijev, Vassiljev, Kallaste; Purje

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Estonia have scored an average of 0.8 goals and conceded an average of 0.8 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of England’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 2 of Estonia’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Having already qualified for the Euro 2016 finals in France, England will be aiming to maintain their winning momentum. The hosts have maximum points from their 8 games played, including a good 2-0 win at Switzerland and last gasp 3-2 win at Slovenia. Therefore, there can be little doubt that England should win this match and a look back at home wins under manager Roy Hodgson, shows they have won all competitive games by at least 2 goals.

Estonia arrive at Wembley with an outside chance of qualifying. If they win both of their remaining matches and Switzerland and Slovenia slip-up, they can claim an automatic qualifying place. However, this is unlikely and the best they can really hope for is third place and a play-off spot. Estonia have failed to win a single game in their last 7 competitive away matches and have lost 6 of them. They have also failed to score a goal in their last 5 competitive away games.

There is very little to suggest anything other than a home win here, the real question is by how many goals England will win.
