Exeter vs Chesterfield Preview

Exeter have their eyes set on League One football next season and only four points currently separate them and a guaranteed promotion spot. Back to back wins against Crewe and Grimsby Town have helped get The Grecians back on track after three tough games against Mansfield, Wycombe and league-leaders Luton from which they only picked up a single point. Against Crewe, Paul Tisdale’s side battled until the final whistle and were trailing 1-0 at 90 minutes until two injury-time goals from Jordan Taylor-Moore and Jayden Stockley sealed a heroic victory. They showed similar determination in their latest match against Grimsby where they held onto a 1-0 lead with 10 men after defender Kane Wilson was sent off for his second yellow of the game.

Jake Taylor and Troy Brown are both back from injury and will likely make Tisdale’s starting XI. Kane Wilson picked up a red card in Exeter’s last match against Grimsby and will be suspended for this game and could be replaced by either Pierce Sweeney should he be fit.

Chesterfield picked up a good win on Saturday against 7th placed Swindon after suffering four consecutive defeats. That win doesn’t take them out of the relegation zone but does take them 2 points closer to third-bottom Port Vale who only managed a point against Newport. Port Vale play bottom of the table Barnet at the same time on Saturday and anything but a win for Chesterfield could see them either rock-bottom or 8 points adrift of safety. Jack Lester will be demanding a big performance from his men who have picked up maximum points this season against big teams such as Luton and Swindon.

Whilst Chesterfield have picked up a respectable 21 points at home this season, they have only collected 9 on the road. They currently have the worst away record in League Two and have struggled to find the net when not on home turf.

Midfielder Robbie Weir went off injured in the first half against Swindon and is a doubt for Saturday’s match. Jack Lester may also be without a string of other players due to injury including Zavon Hines, Dylan Mottley-Henry, Sam Hird, Ian Evatt, Ricky German, Gozie Ugwu and Jordan Flores.

Exeter vs Chesterfield Predictions

Both sides have a lot to play for at the moment. Exeter are pushing for a guaranteed promotion spot while Chesterfield are battling to remain in League Two next season. With Port Vale playing Barnet on Saturday, this is a must-win game for the visitors. However, Exeter have only conceded 4 goals in their last 5 games and will keep Chesterfield’s opportunities to a minimum. It’s possible that there could be an upset on the cards but we’ve backed Paul Tisdale’s side to narrowly take the three points in what could be a very tight afair between teams at opposite ends of the table.
