Friday’s 250th Doncaster Cup on Town Moor has attracted a competitive field with the likes of 2015 Ascot Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris, plus this year’s runner-up Mizzou expected to be confirmed at Wednesday’s 48-hour declaration stage along with the likes of Clever Cookie, Quest For More and Clondaw Warrior.
But it is the three-year-old St Michel representing Sir Mark Prescott in the 2m 2f Group 2 contest which is selected to be this week’s free horse racing tip.
Friday's racing tip will be in receipt of a stone from most of his rivals and the son of Sea The Stars can emulate the stable's Alleluia who landed the race in 2001 under Jamie MacKay - only the second of the Classic generation to win the historic stamina test during the last twenty five years.
The colt has showed improved form since stepping up in trip, winning all of his three starts over two miles with the one defeat in his last four outings coming when going down by a short head over an inadequate mile and a half at Sandown back in July. St Michel looks a popular tip as the 16-1 available prior to the final declarations is going fast. The colt looks good each-way value in his first attempt at this marathon trip likely to bring about yet more improvement.
On Ascot form, Mizzou is sure to prove a tough rival but at 5-2 represents little in the way of value for a horse who doesn't win very often. The current dry spell is hardly likely to suit mud-lover Clever Cookie so the biggest danger to the selection may turn out to be the dual-purpose Clondaw Warrior who has been in excellent form this season and will have the services of Ryan Moore in the saddle.
