Free Horse Racing Tip – Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster Saturday 2 April

The first major handicap of the Turf Flat season, Doncaster’s Betway-sponsored Lincoln, has changed significantly since the introduction of the all-weather programme. A horse’s fitness is less important than was once the case leading to a number of trainers targeting the famous one-mile contest with an unexposed contender rather than one primed to perfection for the big day.

The ex-French five-year-old Lord Of The Land is one such entry from the stable of David O’Meara who fits the bill (best price 8-1 favourite with bookmakers). But it is the William Haggas-trained Mitraad who appeals most in an effort to give the Newmarket handler his fourth victory in the race following High Low (1992), Very Wise (2007) and Penitent 2010.

Available at 10-1 with Betway the son of Aqlaam has tasted defeat just the once in three starts when failing by half a length to give 17lb to Hakka at Chelmsford last August. The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned gelding received a bump leaving the stalls on that occasion and had anything but a trouble-free passage. Otherwise the likely mount of Paul Hanagan could well be still unbeaten following a maiden win at Newmarket on his debut and a comfortable handicap victory back at headquarters on his only other start.

A handicap mark of 99 looks potentially lenient about a possible Group/Listed performer against a field likely to consist of mostly well-exposed rivals. Along with the two horses mentioned the other exception is the Godolphin runner Udododontu, and fresh from a couple of creditable efforts at Meydan, the ex-Richard Guest inmate can prove the biggest danger to the selection.
