Champions League preview – Gent vs Wolfsburg prediction.

Gent coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck will make a late decision on attacking midfielder Brecht Dejaegere who is reported as doubtful for the visit of Wolfsburg on Wednesday. Moses Simon was withdrawn after 28 minutes of Gent’s 2-0 victory over Mouscron-Peruwelz on Friday and Moubarak Boussoufa is on standby should the Nigerian winger fail to make the lineup. Midfielder Hannes van der Bruggen is sidelined with a groin strain and reserve centre-forward Peter Olayinka is out of the squad with an ankle problem.

Central defender Naldo is suspended for the first leg which signals a return to the Wolfsburg back four for Dante who has been benched for the last two games in favour of Robin Knoche. Andre Schurrle and Max Arnold have been suffering niggles and may not be risked despite coming off the bench to feature in the 2-0 victory over Ingolstadt on Saturday. Koen Casteels will continue to cover in goal for Diego Benaglio who is suffering from a rib injury while Bas Dost and Josuha Guilavogui remain sidelined.

Prediction

Gent recovered from back-to-back defeats at Belgian title rivals Club Brugge with victory over bottom-of-the-league Mouscron-Peruwelz at the weekend. Saturday’s victory extended Gent’s winning home run to seven games in all competitions. Gent were runners-up to Zenit in Champions League Group H. The Belgian side looked down and out with one point from the first three games but responded with victories over Valencia, Lyons and Zenit in the final three matches to emerge surprise qualifiers for the knockout stage.

Wolfsburg ended a run of seven league games without a win when defeating Ingolstadt last time. Dieter Hecking’s side qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League by defeating Manchester United 3-2 in the final game which left them top of the standings above second-placed PSV. Wolfsburg won 2-0 at CSKA Moscow in the group phase which was their second all time away win in the competition.

Gent have an impressive home record and can capitalise on Wolfsburg’s lacklustre form since returning from the winter break.
