The West Course at Wentworth again takes center stage for this year’s renewal of the prestigious BMW PGA Championship. This tournament has always been regarded as the flagship event on the European Tour schedule, but this year has arguably attracted a substandard field. The title sponsors must be disappointed with Rory Mac swerving the event, and the no show from the likes of Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia. Add in the missing injured Justin Rose and the missing top South African contingent, this certainly doesn’t feel like a vintage renewal by any means.

The classic Par 72, 7,284yd parkland track was originally the creation of legendary golf architect Harry Colt, but more recently has undergone an extensive and somewhat controversial 15 million pound redesign by West Course resident Ernie Els. Having visited this event before I can verify that the changes at the West Course has certainly beefed up the course and represents a stern challenge, particularly in blustery conditions. The key holes around this layout, are the ultra tough Par 4 first and third holes, and the final two holes, which can offer genuine chances of an eagle, but can just as easily wreck a scorecard. The key attributes required to tame this layout are good strategic approach play, and the ability, if required to handle the deceptive Wentworth winds, and also to read these notoriously difficult putting surfaces.

Francesco Molinari 20/1 E/W Paddy Power (7 Places)

My first selection goes to Francesco Molinari who boasts a really solid record around this layout, with four consecutive top 10 finishes in the last four years. This is the Italians first start on the European Tour this season as he now bases himself on the PGA Tour, but his game looked in really good shape in his latest start at the Players Championship at Sawgrass . He finished Tied 7th over that demanding track, where even his suspect putting stroke on frighteningly slick greens looked sharp. With an earlier top 10 finish at Bay Hill, and a solid effort (Tied 17th) over the difficult Quail Hollow the week before the Players, everything points to another strong week for this sublime ball striker.
