This week’s Open De Espana will be held at the Real Club Valderrama, San Roque, Andalucia. The 6,991yd Par 71 layout is a really tough, tree-lined course designed by Robert Trent Jones, that demands accuracy, not power from the tee, and sound positional play from the undulating fairways. The greens are very large, undulating and very quick. The signature hole is undoubtedly the iconic par 5 17th, a real risk-reward hole where the green is protected by water and a shaved bank.

This venue last hosted a European Tour event in 2011, when the Andalucia Masters was played here, but it had previously been a long-standing stop for the end of season finale, the Volvo Masters between 1988-1996 and 2002-2008. The course historically always provides a stern test, but with warm sunny conditions and little wind forecast for this year, the course may play a little easier than in 2011, when only six players finished under par. Post-Major fatigue must be considered this week for punting purposes.

Soren Kjeldsen 16-1 each-way Coral

A player to have on your side this week is the resurgent Dane Soren Kjeldsen, who ticks all the right boxes in terms of current form and course form. The likeable 40-year-old produced a stellar performance last week at Augusta, where he finished Tied 7th, after contending for much of the final round. He also boasts really solid course form, having won the 2008 Volvo Masters, and finishing runner-up the previous year. This type of thinking man’s test sets up perfectly for this great course strategist, who will hopefully arrive here fresh enough to contend again this week.
