One of the highlights of the PGA Tour is here, in its now customary May position. The Pete Dye Par 72, 7215-yards layout at Sawgrass is a real shot makers course, with some holes favouring faders, others the draw, and players will encounter have many uphill, as well as downhill lies. In short there’s nowhere to hide on this course and the best players usually rise to the top of the leaderboard come Sunday, though there’s been the odd surprise or two, short hitter Fred Funk comes to mind.

Though length of the tee is not a requirement, good mid-iron players will prosper and being able to scramble around these small, ultra-fast greens is a must. All eyes will as ever be on the island green at 17th, a real card wrecker; as Sergio Garcia can testify as he lost the event here in 2013 when he made 7 on this Par 3 when in the lead.

Jordan Spieth 10/1 E/W BetVictor

It’s going to be interesting to see which Spieth turns up this week, after such a woeful capitulation in the Masters. But I think Spieth was battling his game at Augusta all week, though his long game was not far away, and it was more accuracy with his mid to short irons which was the problem. I can see no reason why he would not be able to come back after a short break, with his problems literally ‘ironed’ out, and put in a major effort this week. I think it a little of an overreaction to say he had a meltdown, he could almost take a positive to say how close he got with his game only C-. When he’s on song, Spieth is one of the best scramblers in the game and obviously, his putting is not too bad either. Sawgrass also needs pin point accuracy with the irons and I will be watching intently to see if that part of the game is back. Though he will probably tell you himself, as he generally commentates on his own game! I feel Spieth may just want to make a statement this week.
